Stanley Laifoo - Pearl Diving In The Torres Strait

This painting tells a small part of the pearling industry.  Local men in Torres Strait have always been fee divers the industry started to take off.  The island divers with helmets and the compressors. The divers got supply two pairs of flannel that kept them warm and sand shoes.  The divers became very good at diving and went onto to skipper luggers and eventually owned their own luggers in the pearling industry.
