SUGU DHMURR | WINNER BEST CONTEMPORARY JEWELLERY

Long time ago the elders would teach me about how to go Sugu lumaik (octopus hunting). During the day when I would go fishing on the moegi tharra (small reef), that is closer to the shore, I would look for fresh open shells and Sugu arrkath (octopus’ hole). The open shells would be evidence that there is a Sugu occupying an arrkath near to it because they had eaten the meat from the shell the previous night.

Then on a low tide on a moonlit night I would go down to moegi tharra (small reef) to look for the Sugu (octopus). Whenever I catch the Sugu I look firstly at it dhmurr (tentacles) if it shines, I know that the Sugu is eatable.

My jewellery set represents this story. The colours entwined are the changing colours of a Sugu when avoids it predators by disguising itself and camouflaging. When the Sugu relaxes its colour is caramel when it senses the predator it changes colour into orange or pink. Also, all octopus’ have blue veins, the colour blue is also represented.
