KAZI WARUL UOMARAIK  | WINNER BEST 3D

This sculpture ruminates the very cycle of newly hatched born turtles. The greatest challenges for survival as the baby turtles start their journey from the underground sand nest to the warm seashores from the shallow waters to the great blue ocean.

The baby turtles in hundreds rush themselves unknowingly aware of the great dangers of the predators. These predators in the wildlife such as seabirds, crocodiles, sharks, and large fish as the baby turtles struggle themselves into the ocean for survival and grow into adulthood and back into the cycle of its own kind.

The future is at critical stage and is unknown to the future they face. We must start protecting them, especially when they first hatch from their nest and the precious moment of the journey from the nest to the seashores.

JUDGE’S COMMENTS

Carved from a single bloodwood post, combining local natural and sourced materials the artist creates a towering homage to the early cycle of a hatchling: birth, survival, journey, and freedom. This is a highly meditative work – beautifully realised in sculptural form.
